Ketamine
In addition to being used for the maintenance and induction of anesthesia, ketamine is also used for treating depression and other pain conditions. In 1962, a new compound was developed that is derived from phencyclidine.
Ketamine can induce a state of dissociation, which is characterized by amnesia, pain relief, and sedation. Its distinctive features include the preservation of airway reflexes and breathing, as well as the stimulation of heart function with bronchodilation and increased blood pressure.
Although it can be used for treating depression, the effects of ketamine on a single dose can wane over time. Because of this, it is not yet known if repeated use can have long-term effects.
Regular users of the drug have reportedly experienced toxic effects, such as kidney and liver toxicity. The main mechanism by which this drug works is the NMDA receptor.
The drug was first synthesized in 1962. It was approved for use in the US in 1970. It has been used in various medical fields, such as veterinary medicine, and it was also used during the Vietnam War as an anesthetic. Currently, ketamine is on the WHO’s list of essential medicines.
