PMA, also known as 4-methoxyamphetamine, is a designer drug that has a psychoactive effect. Unlike other amphetamines, it does not produce entactogen or stimulant effects. It also behaves similarly to an antidepressant. Despite this, it has some psychedelic properties.
Pharmacology
Serotonin-producing agents (SRAs) such as PMA are commonly used to treat various conditions, such as schizophrenia and depression. However, they are not as effective as reuptake inhibitors due to their weak effects on the nervous system. Compared to MDMA, PMA is less toxic and elicits less hyperactivity and neurotoxicity.
Unlike other drugs, such as MDMA and amphetamine, PMA is not self-administered. According to human reports, it does not appear to be particularly pleasurable. It has also been shown that it can act as a potent inhibitor of the enzyme MAO-A, which is also known to be involved in the production of serotonin. This combination of the two properties has been regarded as the likely reason why it has a high lethality potential.
It has also been known that PMA can raise body temperatures and cause serotonin syndrome. This condition is believed to be caused by the drug’s ability to block the production of the enzyme MAO-A and release large amounts of serotonin. Although other drugs that are similar to MDMA, such as amphetamines, are known to be effective at treating certain conditions, they are not recommended for use with MAOIs.
A wide range of adrenergic and amphetamine compounds can raise body temperatures. PMA, on the other hand, activates the hypothalamus more strongly than other drugs, such as MDMA. This is believed to cause rapid increases in body temperature, which is the main cause of death in PMA users.
Some PMA users try to get rid of the effects of the drug by taking off their clothes and putting them inside a cold shower. They also sometimes shave their hair.
The toxicological and physiological properties of this compound has not been analyzed. Usage of this Chemical should be for research and forensic purposes only.
