Dr. Matthew Piggott of the University of Western Australia has developed a phenethylamine derivative called UWA-101, which is being studied as a potential treatment for people with Parkinson’s disease. The chemical structure of UWA-101 is similar to that of a drug known as MDMA. Its potential use as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease has been studied.
MDMA has been shown to be effective in short-term relief of side effects of drugs used for Parkinson’s disease. However, MDMA and its illegal status and potential toxicity make it unlikely to be used for medical purposes.
A cyclopropyl derivative is also more advantageous than -methyl for reducing the noradrenaline transporter’s affinity and increasing the serotonin transporter’s affinity.
As for UWA-101, its change in composition caused it to exhibit MDMA-like behavioral and cytotoxicity effects in animals. However, it retained its antidyskinetic properties.
The toxicological and physiological properties of this compound has not been analyzed. Usage of this Chemical should be for research and forensic purposes only.
