Methylone, MDMC, βk-MDMA, M1, 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylcathinone, bk-MDMA
MDMC, also known as methylone, is a psychoactive substance that can be used as an empathogen and a stimulant. It is a member of the same class of drugs that are commonly used as amphetamines, such as methylenedioxyphenethylamine.
5-methoxy methylone is a derivative of tryptamines that can be used to suppress the monoamine transport function. This drug is similar to MiPT, which can also be used to inhibit the function of monoamine transport.
Methylone is a derivative of the cathinone and 3,4methylenedioxy analogs of methcathinone. Like MDMA, methylone has only one structural difference. It is formed by the substitution of hydrogen atoms with oxygen atoms in the phenethylamine core.
In 1996, Alexander Shulgin and Ph.D. Jacob III synthesized methylone for possible use as an antidepressant. It was then sold as recreational drugs. Because of the absence of legal restrictions in most countries, the recreational use of this substance has been permitted.
In rats that are trained to discriminate between MDMA and saline, methylone is used as a substitute for this illicit substance. It does not work similarly to amphetamine in terms of its effects on the central nervous system. Further, it is also active in the monoaminergic system and has the same effect as MDMA on the noradrenaline and dopamine receptors.
Despite the similarities between MDMA and methylone, the effects of these drugs on different individuals are not completely identical. For instance, Alexander Shulgin noted that the subjective effects of both substances are not the same.
Pharmacology
As a reuptake inhibitor, methylone is able to release various chemicals, such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, into the bloodstream. In comparison, MDMA has a lower binding affinity for these receptors. It also has a lower level of affinity for another important serotonin-related chemical, VMAT2.
The pharmacology of methylone is similar to that of MDMA. It has a lower potency in terms of its effect on the central nervous system and is more balanced in terms of its catecholaminergic effects. However, it is still capable of releasing large amounts of drugs into the bloodstream. This is because it is able to phosphorylate the multiple monoamine transport molecules, which is similar to that of MDMA.
The toxicological and physiological properties of this compound has not been analyzed. Usage of this Chemical should be for research and forensic purposes only.
